Imperial Innovations is a technology commercialisation company that combines the activities of technology transfer, intellectual property protection and licensing, company incubation, and investment.
Innovations is focused on commercialising the most promising UK academic research across a broad range of technology sectors, and has developed particular expertise in: therapeutics, medtech, engineering and materials and information communication technology.
Originally founded as the technology transfer office for Imperial College London, Innovations also invests in opportunities typically arising from intellectual property developed at, or associated with, the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford and University College London, in addition to those arising from Imperial College London. These are the top four research intensive universities in Europe (QS World University Rankings) receiving between them research income of over £1.3 billion per annum.
Innovations support scientists and entrepreneurs in the commercialisation of their research through:
- Leading the formation of new companies
- Providing operational expertise and facilities in the early stages
- Providing substantial investment capability and facilitating co-investment to accelerate development
- Helping to recruit high-calibre executive management teams and board members to portfolio companies
Innovations also run an incubator that provides laboratory and office space in London that is the initial home for many of their portfolio companies.
Since 2005, Innovations has raised £206.0 million in net proceeds from investors, which has enabled it to make substantial investments within its group of portfolio companies, as well as building and investing in new companies. Innovations also has a £30 million loan facility from the European Investment Bank.
