The Ministry of Defence (MOD) spends over £20 billion a year on a wide range of products and services, including about £14 billion on defence equipment. Despite recent austerity measures and budget cuts, MOD's forward programme remains very significant. This was emphasised by the publication in January 2013 of the Defence Equipment Plan which outlines the planned spend of £159 billion over the next ten-year period for new equipment, data systems and equipment support, thus enabling companies in the defence and security sector to better plan for forthcoming requirements.
The Government recognises that Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are often a source for agility and innovation, and with efforts co-ordinated by the Cabinet Office, it has committed to increasing the participation of SMEs in public sector procurement. The MOD wholeheartedly supports this initiative and recognises the huge value and specialist niche capabilities that SMEs and university spin-outs can bring to defence and security.
The Defence Suppliers Service (DSS) is the MOD focal point for the provision of advice and guidance to companies interested in selling to defence.
