Working for yourself - giving your business the best start with tax  When you set up your own business as a self-employed sole trader or in a partnership, you need to register for Self Assessment with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). This publication sets out the right steps for this.  HMRC will set up the right tax and National Insurance records for you and can help you understand what you need to know about tax and help you to get it right. 

Self-employedready reckoner Use this HMRC online tool to discover whether you qualify as 'Self-Employed'. Enter your estimated profit then select whether this is weekly or monthly and click the 'Calculate' button.
