Solent LEP powers Datum Electronic Growth…

October 2018

Datum Electronics is world-leading manufacturer & supplier of torque and shaft power measurement tools and equipment worldwide. Aimed at enhancing product performance and optimising energy efficiency, Datum torque sensors and shaft power meters have been successfully deployed in a range of industries & applications all over the world.
As a direct result of the Solent LEP grant, Datum Electronics was able to move to bigger facilities to increase the size of design, marketing & product support teams, to meet the continuously increasing demand for our torque sensor products.   The new facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, to facilitate the company’s research & development capabilities, expand our marketing & support teams and extend our product range.
Following our successful move to the new premises, in the past 12 months Datum Electronics has grown the team, employed local representatives in several countries and heavily invested in the research & development of a new ground-breaking product for the marine market.
Solent LEP Growth Hub is a great initiative to help small and medium sized enterprises in the Solent by enabling them to expand teams, improve production facilities and facilitate innovative products and services to the market.
They’ve provided invaluable support to Datum Electronics and with their help we have been able to grow our business and expand to new territories.

I approached the Solent LEP Growth Hub in mid-November with a very unclear business proposal but a strong idea for the development of an idea to tackle a very real and known problem. Solent LEP Growth Hub were very open to helping me and after a brief telephone conversation, Jayne Sime suggested that the first step would be to meet with an organisation who may be able to help me establish possible funding sources to help develop the idea. I was introduced to Richard Hall at Green Tech and had a meeting arranged within a few days. At the meeting I was able to outline the needs I had which were blocking the development of my business ideas. Greentech South signed NDA’s which gave me confidence to discuss more openly with Richard and his colleagues. Richard immediately understood the issues I was intending to tackle, the implications for businesses and people and suggested a way forward. A meeting has been arranged with relevant and interested parties which will be taking place in the next couple of weeks. This has all taken less than 3 weeks – on my own I could not have achieved all this in such a short time, so thank you Solent LEP Growth Hub & I look forward to moving ahead with my ideas and am sure that we are just at the beginning of an ongoing beneficial relationship.

Solent LEP Growth Hub have for the first part been a great pointer for activities in the area and identifying key activities to focus on. Significantly through the Solent LEP Growth Hub I learnt of a competition being awarded from a local company that I won which was significant in aiding me to secure more Intellectual Property and prototypes, as well as continuing various administration costs.  They have reminded me and given me confidence to focus on one key area of my business. I have received financial advice and ideas for how to progress my innovation.  I also really appreciated some well given practical advice when I had a moment of loss of knowing what direction I should move in. Always at the end of the phone and contactable when I need it.
