Department for International Trade (DiT)

Explore the potential of exporting with guidance, services & support from the Department for International Trade. If you want to substantially increase revenue, profits & customer base, consider exporting. Government support is available via the Department for International Trade.

DIT is an international economic department, responsible for:

  • bringing together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment, and help businesses succeed
  • delivering a new trade policy framework for the UK as we leave the EU
  • promoting British trade and investment across the world
  • building the global appetite for British goods and services.

Dr Liam Fox MP, Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade wrote: “Global trade is growing and changing rapidly, representing a world of opportunity for UK exporters. Approximately 90% of global economic growth in the next 10 to 15 years is expected to be generated outside the EU, while the growth of the digital economy and trade in services is making the world smaller than ever. UK businesses are superbly placed to take advantage of these trends. This is the UK’s export challenge: working together to access a greater proportion of world trade to drive growth, productivity and prosperity”.

UK Export Finance (UKEF)

UKEF is part of DIT and is the UK’s export credit guarantee department.

UKEF helps UK companies to:

  • win export contracts by providing attractive financing terms to their buyers
  • fulfil contracts by supporting working capital loans
  • get paid by insuring against buyer default

New exporters should be working closely with their bank at the beginning of their export journey.  UKEF supports banks to support companies and 77% of its clients last year were SMEs. UKEF export finance managers provide free and impartial consultations. They help UK companies to check they are getting the appropriate support and, if not, explore how to bridge any gaps.
