Who are we?
All schools and colleges are required to deliver a careers programme that inspires and informs their students about the world of work. To support with this, we are matching every school and college with a volunteer from business who can provide advice on effectively engaging with employers. These volunteers form the Solent Enterprise Adviser Network.
Benefits to Business
Solent LEP hear regularly that one of the barriers for business in increasing productivity and growth is a mismatch and under-utilisation of skills. The projects we are working on alongside our schools and colleges in the area seek to address this issue by providing businesses access to young people to help shape their future workforce.
Through supporting local schools and colleges, employers can gain an insight into the education landscape and as a result adapt the recruitment or training practices that are being used. The direct interaction with the talent pipeline can also contribute to meeting the requirements of any Corporate Social Responsibility policy.
Individuals who get involved with these projects can develop skills such as:
- Workload management
- Community awareness
- Teamwork and communication
- Network building
An Enterprise Adviser is a connected, credible and committed individual who works strategically with a school or college’s senior leadership team, using their own experiences and expertise to build on the existing programmes being offered.

As directed by Government in their Careers Strategy, 20 pilot Careers Hubs have been established across the country.
The focus of the hubs is to support 20-40 schools and colleges on achieving all eight Gatsby Benchmarks, a standard adopted by the Department for Education for good careers guidance.
In the Solent our Careers Hub covers the schools and colleges in Portsmouth, Havant, Fareham and Gosport.
Over the next two years we will be encouraging those educational establishments and businesses to work closely together to ensure that there is effective messaging and programmes to promote the Solent as a prosperous place to live and work.
The Solent East Careers Hub will require the support of local employers in our key sectors to help inspire students, teachers and parents and increase the awareness of the career options available.
